Go do it - but DO IT with a registered training provider and at the very least, get a "Basic Welding Certificate" - it will introduce you to most of the common machines and process's and it will cover the safety aspects of it, so you don't kill your self, or burn your shed / workshop / house down.... You see welding is good, fun, safe and amazing... Kind of like driving a car - until it registers that your doing 60 mph in one direction and should your or the car driver coming from the other direction, veer into either one's lane, your having a 120 mph head on... so your really directing two great masses with a horrendous impact speed, past each other, with only feet to spare... thousands of times a day, a week, a month or a year..... @TripeSwing: Almost EVERYTHING made of metal, is WELDED. Being able to weld - but competently, so your not just laying down bird shit, but are doing a strong, mechanically sound weld, on GOOD materials, means your ability to make ALL sorts of things, just goes off the planet..... Work Benches, Jigs, log splitters, hoists, lifters, etc., and to make almost anything, all you need is a stick welder, a drill and drill press, and some kind of cutting system - and you can price a steel work bench at say $4000, or you can buy the NEW steel for $800, or you can buy seconds for $400.... You can get a lot of material cut to length at the steel yard, and you can do bits and pieces at home.. Think usually rectangular or square tubes... There is a ratio, that most domestic stuff is small stuff and most stuff for railway engines and rolling stock are BIG stuff and ships in ship yards are HUGE stuff. So if your going domestic, get domestic sized gear to make domestic sized products from domestic sized material....
