This is a commercial tree felling operation - but the eucalyptus trees have a peculiar cracking sort of sounds similar to this, and I have seen a video many years ago of people standing a distance away, from a tent under a giant River Red Gum, and a HUGE fucking branch - about 80cm in diameter where it joined the tree, just made all these cracking noises for a second or two and then it dropped and went "THUMP" - all just like in this video - when it crashed down on the tent...

Gum Trees are not inherently evil, but when you need a good place to camp that NEEDS shade in the day, and they are the only things that give shade... well either bring a reflective tarpaulin to put over the tent - as the tents sun shade and stay well away from the trees, and or pick an area that based upon the weight and mass of the whole tree - if it was going to fall over, which way would it fall, and make sure there are either NO branches over your tent either large ones, or even small ones - alive or dead, that can spear you from a height.

There is a recommended ratio of staying 1.5 x the height, away from them.

If the tree is say 20 meters high, stay 30 meters away from it.

They are lovely trees, but a lot of people have been killed by them, a lot more have been injured by them and enormous amounts of people have had near misses and or property damage.

You can see some of the broken off limbs on this tree.

In fact they are all over the place.....
