I think the cat was more upset with the guy with the broom, and was trying to stay out of his way. Though very rare, some cats will shy away from rats, in that they won't always attack them. As a Chicago native, I never saw that happen. Plenty of rats, plenty of stray cats (you can guess who ran more from the other). In Indiana, while dumping some trash, I witnessed a female cat literally destroy a rat, while her kittens were playing nearby. The grass was pretty tall, so it was hard to see the loud commotion, except in the end, when the cat was carrying away the killed rat by it's neck. Of course in certain breeds, the "Tom" (whose usually larger) plays with his prey before killing it, while the female usually doesn't waste any time, especially if she has kittens. My former landlords (man/wife) had a Manx, who liked to "share" his kills with me, keeping/eating half the mouse, and putting the other half in one of my boots, so I supposedly have some for "breakfast" when I awakened. Lol! Cats are cool, imo. LMAO!
