I'm a little late to the topic, plus I don't have much to contribute in terms of unique answers. But I will say that I'm of the opinion that food is one of the biggest factors to our overall health. High sugar and carb intake puts a lot of stress on the human body and slowly breaks it down, even if the person is not overweight i.e. vegans that waste away. The constant feed of glucose overloads the liver and puts us in a constant state of insulin resistance- so the body thinks its starving and always seeking to store fat rather than burn it. So the body burns glucose instead of fat which leads to all kinds of problems.
We've been lied to about what is truly healthiest for us. To keep it short animal products are best for us to eat as it has fantastic vitamins, proteins and fats to satiate the body. Anything plant based can be enjoyed sparingly but will become detrimental if consumed even moderately.
So yeah, carbs & sugar being in our food is a big factor. But many things being touted as food, IMO, aren't actually food. At least, not something that can be used by the human body.
I think is a lot to be said about dietary intake BECAUSE some people can manage their diabetes with strict diet. These folks don't have to take insulin and they don't develop the severe consequences. Wear and tear on the human body over time seems to a factor as well.
Because (at least here in America) everybody is a fat fucking slob...ESPECIALLY WOMEN!!!

Of course everyone has diabetes now. My Apple Watch app says so...
It's a combination of the food we eat, the drug's we take, the reduced physical activity and contaminants in well everything. Even the chemicals in heat transfer paper are absorbed through the skin and act as endocrine disruptors. It's essentially death by a thousand pin prick's.
