Ambassador Charles "Chas" Freeman Jr. Ambassador Chas Freeman is a distinguished American diplomat, author, and speaker with a legacy of service spanning more than three decades in U.S. foreign affairs. Most famously, he served as principal interpreter for President Richard Nixon during his historic 1972 visit to China, helping to open a new chapter in U.S.-China relations. Freeman later served as U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the critical years of the Gulf War (1989–1992), playing a pivotal role in managing U.S. interests in the region. He has held senior positions at the U.S. Department of Defense, including Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs under President Bill Clinton. Ambassador Freeman has long been an advocate for realism and diplomacy in U.S. foreign policy, contributing thoughtful analysis as the past president of the Middle East Policy Council and co-chair of the U.S.-China Policy Foundation.
