It's less of a choice than you're making it out to be. A lot of people invest the time to try to develop bonds with other people, and all it does is get them ripped off. Illusion of choice. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

That does happen sometimes, but if you don't make the "choice," which is not an illusion, control is the illusion, then you'll never form any bonds. Sure, you can get betrayed, taken advantage of if you make the effort, but if you make no effort yuo won't gain those bonds either.
