The GOP establishment seemingly tried to keep him off the ticket in '76 and '80. In '76, Ford was weak, so we got Carter, who is STILL the worst "legitimately elected" president in our history. They wanted Bush (former CIA director) in '80, but he was a lousy, candidate, lacking any personality, compared to the charismatic Reagan, who won two consecutive elections in landslide fashion. Even a charismatic, corruptible Bill Clinton, with all his faults, kicked Bush's ass in the '92 election.
